10 tips on choosing your wardrobe for a headshot session

10 tips on choosing your wardrobe for a headshot session- Canberra Branding Headshot Photography
  1. For branding portraits, the most important stylistic consideration is that what you’re wearing feels right for your brand and you feel good wearing the outfit- all the other general tips are secondary to this.

  2. Bring multiple outfits for variety so you can use the images across multiple platforms- accessories can also add variety.

  3. Solid / block colours often photograph better than patterns- when background has a lot of details, when you are in nature, or if you are in a group.

  4. Structured outfits often photographs really well, so bringing a jacket or blazer as an option is always a great idea.

  5. Avoid logos and wording on clothing- UNLESS you are making a statement with these.

  6. The ‘safest’ colour options for photography are warm neutrals and navy in block colours, they are also the easiest to coordinate in a team session.

  7. Consider your background - warm colours tend to look better in nature. Avoid wearing the same colour as your background.

  8. All black can sometimes be problematic- details in blacks often don’t come out in photos and look completely flat.

  9. Ladies - check for visible bra lines, and do a ‘cross your arms’ test (are you happy with your chest area in your outfit with arms crossed? How about if you lean forward a little?)

  10. There are lots of examples of when breaking the rules is great! My favourite corporate client outfit was a hot pink suit worn by a partner at Deloitte. Bring a second ‘break all the rules’ outfit that you love.

Naked Cubby / Breakfast with Dinny

Earlier in the year I photographed the launch of Dinny - a new addition to the Naked Cubby Co. family at Mount Majura winery. It was a cosy breakfast amongst the vines, featuring some of Canberra’s awesome local businesses - Three Mills bakery had their incredible pastries and were making damper rolls over a fire pit; Redbrick coffee were pouring their best blends; Mount Majura winery were keeping everyone’s glasses topped up with their sparkling; and Tea Garden ran tea tasting and a tea blending workshop.

Dinny, of course, was the star of the show. A solar powered and self contained ‘tiny home’ with the most luxurious and stylish finishes. I’m keen to have a staycation here when this lockdown situation improves. The toddler is not invited.

Acro Alliance Dance School Photoshoot

I’ve been very fortunate to be good friends with the lovely “Miss Andy” for the past few years- shes’ an incredible acro dance teacher who teaches dancers as well as acro dance instructors around the world.

We did a photoshoot to create content for the Acro Alliance website as well as some headshots for her in mid 2020 with a group of her demonstrator students from the Pointe to Pointe studio (where she teaches out of in Canberra). Those amazing little bodies are OUT OF THIS WORLD.

Je Fleur Florist Shop Launch Photoshoot

I absolutely loved spending some time in the beautiful new space at Je Fleur, photographing the store, some of their gorgeous creations, and headshots for the team.

Je Fleur Florist bring European style floristry to Canberra, they do bespoke bouquets, wedding styling, and cute gifts like candles with plantable seeds inspired by the scents. They’re right next to Intra and Mrs Fray in Campbell - such a great little spot to spend a morning.

To take a peek at a campaign shoot I photographed for their website, go to this blog post.

Je Fleur Canberra Campaign Shoot

Screen Shot 2021-02-04 at 9.19.09 pm.png

I had the pleasure of shooting a campaign for the launch of Je Fleur Florist at the Social Club in 2020. The owner of the business ran floral styling businesses in Paris and Milan prior to moving to Canberra; and she wanted to bring a little bit of European floral design to Provan Street in Campbell - what a treat for Canberra locals!

Yan is also passionate about sourcing botanicals that are rare and unique, so she’s in the process of creating her own flower farm- how incredible.

Melody wears garments from Mrs Fray.
