Routeburn Track on Film

Routeburn Track, Fiordland National Park New Zealand

In February I joined a few friends for a 3 day, 32km hike along the Routeburn Track, with the Adventure company Ultimate Hikes. Fiordland National Park is breathtaking. Truly out of this world.

The alpine trail was not an easy walk- plenty of scrambling over rocks over steep sections, walking along semi flooded tracks, getting soaked in rain and waterfalls, with the first day being 12km uphill, but we were well supported by the guides and at night we stayed at luxurious lodges with fireplaces, drying rooms, and 3 course meals (with wine, importantly). Supplies were helicoptered into the lodges each day. Our backpacks were fairly light- only about 10-ish kgs - since we did not have to carry tents, or much water. Guided tours like this is great for those that want to experience a multi day hike through semi remote locations but didn’t have camping gear.

Filling up my water bottles from the pristine glacial waterfalls felt very magical.

What an incredible place for the senses, and a treat to photograph. Lugging my hefty Canon Eos 1V and 35mm 1.4L lens was totally worth the extra weight.
